Skill Moves
Working on skill moves provides a foundation for ball control, comfort on the ball, and self-confidence. It’s also a lot of fun! And in the era of Youtube, viewing the latest videos of moves and tricks is easy.
For the Challenge, we’ve selected a number of skill moves (with accompanying videos) to develop close control, one-on-one ability, and turning ability. Players will do sets of 50 for each skill move, alternating feet with each repetition. They will generally do two laces dribbles (top of the foot or attack dribbles) between each rep. We have broken down these skill moves into three levels – Beginner, Silver, and Gold - which correspond with the Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced challenge sheets.
For Intermediate and Advanced levels, we have also included a quick (five minute or less) Rollie workout, which emphasizes using the sole of the foot... aka Rollies. This skill is very important for close control.
Coaches may want to substitute or emphasize certain moves based on individual and team goals. They may ask players to double up on using the weaker foot Remember, it's not only the player's ability to pull off a move - hopefully with both feet - but also the comfort and confidence they develop on the ball as a result of practicing.
